The Sweet Shop Time Machine - Chapter 14: The Seaside Rock Dilemma
A family trip to the seaside wasn't complete without one thing.
Seaside rock.
It didn't matter whether you planned to buy it.
You were going home with some.
That was simply how family holidays worked.
Somewhere between the fish and chips, the arcade machines, the donkey rides and the endless battle against seagulls determined to steal your lunch, a sweet shop would appear.
And inside that shop would stand row upon row of brightly coloured sticks of rock.
The choice seemed impossible.
Strawberry.
Lemon.
Mint.
Rainbow.
Candy-floss flavoured.
Multi-coloured twists that looked too impressive to eat.
Every stick promised to be the perfect souvenir.
Of course, selecting the rock was only the beginning.
The real challenge came afterwards.
Getting it home.
In one piece.
This was where optimism often met reality.
The rock was carefully placed in a bag.
The bag was carefully carried.
The bag was then accidentally dropped, leaned on, sat upon or crushed underneath three beach towels, a windbreak, two buckets and a week's worth of holiday enthusiasm.
By the time you reached home, the pristine stick of seaside rock sometimes resembled a jigsaw puzzle.
Yet somehow, that never mattered.
Because seaside rock wasn't really about perfection.
It was about memories.
The moment you saw the name of a seaside town running through the centre.
The mystery of how the letters appeared all the way through the stick.
The satisfaction of breaking off a piece and making it last as long as possible.
At least, that was the intention.
Most sticks didn't survive more than a couple of days.
A week if you possessed extraordinary self-control.
Twenty minutes if you didn't.
Every family also had an official rock expert.
The person responsible for breaking pieces off.
This role carried tremendous responsibility.
Too small and there would be complaints.
Too large and accusations of favouritism quickly followed.
Peace treaties were often required.
Looking back, seaside rock was one of Britain's great confectionery traditions.
Simple.
Colourful.
Unashamedly joyful.
A perfect example of how traditional sweets became woven into family memories.
At Sweet Landon's, we often hear customers talk about the sweets connected to holidays.
Not because they were expensive.
Not because they were rare.
Because they represented a moment.
A family trip.
A summer afternoon.
A memory shared across generations.
That's what makes nostalgic sweets so special.
One taste can instantly transport us back.
The sound of waves.
The smell of the sea.
The excitement of an arcade.
The pleasure of carrying home something sweet as proof that the adventure really happened.
Today, whether you're choosing traditional British sweets, retro favourites, luxury chocolates, artisan fudge, wedding favours or sweet hampers, the reason remains exactly the same.
You're not simply buying confectionery.
You're collecting memories.
Because the best sweets don't just remind us what we ate.
They remind us where we were.
Who we were with.
And how wonderful it felt.
Even if the seaside rock didn't quite survive the journey home.
