Chapter One — The Walk to the Corner Shop

There was always a moment — right after school, or on a lazy Saturday morning — when the world felt full of possibility. A pocket full of coins. A bit of time to spare. And a craving for something sweet.

That’s when the walk began.

The corner shop wasn’t just a shop. It was a destination. A pilgrimage. A tiny adventure wrapped in everyday life. You’d set off down the street, trainers scuffing the pavement, the air carrying that mix of cut grass, car exhaust, and whatever your neighbour was cooking.

And the whole way there, you’d be thinking about sweets.

Not just the taste — the experience. The jars lined up like treasure. The crinkly paper bags. The way the shop bell chimed as you pushed the door open. The feeling that you were stepping into a world built just for you.

Inside, the shopkeeper always knew you. They’d give you that nod — the one that said, “Go on then. What’ll it be today?”

And suddenly you were faced with the greatest decision a kid could make: cola cubes or bonbons? flying saucers or jelly babies? fudge or nougat? Should you save some coins for later? Should you blow the lot?

It was budgeting before you even knew what budgeting meant.

But the best part wasn’t the sweets. It was the ritual. The walk. The anticipation. The tiny moment of independence that made you feel older, braver, freer.

And even now — years later — you can still picture that walk. You can still hear the bell. You can still smell the sugar in the air.

Some memories don’t fade. They just get sweeter.
