Chapter Four — Pick‑and‑Mix Magic

A bright, joyful, cinematic chapter for The Corner Shop Chronicles, written in your signature Sweet Landon’s voice.

Pick‑and‑mix wasn’t just a sweet selection. It was a personality test. A tiny window into who you were as a kid — bold, cautious, chaotic, or a little bit of everything.

The moment you stepped up to that colourful wall of jars, you weren’t just choosing sweets. You were building a masterpiece.

The Scoop — Your First Magic Wand

There was something powerful about holding that little metal scoop.

It made you feel older. Trusted. Responsible for your own destiny… even if that destiny was mostly sugar.

You’d hover it over the jars like you were choosing spells:

  • Fizzy cola bottles for energy

  • Jelly babies for comfort

  • Foam bananas for chaos

  • Toffee pieces for bravery

  • Flying saucers for pure mischief

Every scoop was a decision. Every decision said something about you.

The Jars — A Rainbow of Temptation

The jars were hypnotic.

Rows and rows of colours — reds, yellows, blues, greens — glowing under the shop lights like treasure in a dragon’s cave.

You’d stare at them, imagining the perfect combination. Should you go classic? Should you experiment? Should you risk the sherbet explosion?

And then you’d spot something you forgot existed — a sweet you hadn’t seen in months — and suddenly your whole plan changed.

Pick‑and‑mix was chaos. Beautiful, delicious chaos.

The Paper Bag — Your Treasure Chest

When the shopkeeper handed over that little paper bag, it felt like you’d won something.

You’d peek inside, seeing the colours all jumbled together — a tiny universe of sweets, each one waiting its turn.

The bag rustled as you walked, each sweet shifting like treasure. You’d try to resist eating one straight away… but you never did.

There was always one sweet that didn’t make it home.

The First Bite — Pure Magic

The first sweet from a pick‑and‑mix bag always tasted different. Better. Special.

Because it wasn’t just a sweet. It was the result of your choices. Your creativity. Your tiny moment of independence.

Pick‑and‑mix wasn’t about sugar. It was about freedom. It was about joy. It was about building something that was yours.

And even now, years later, you can still remember the feeling — the colours, the scoop, the rustle of the bag, the taste of that first sweet.

Some magic never fades.
